The laboratory industry has been waiting to receive written notification from CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) of a delay in enforcement of the Provider Signature Rule prior to the previously published deadline of April 1, 2011. For various technical reasons, CMS has encountered difficulties in publishing their intent to rescind the rule. On March 23rd, CMS verbally confirmed to the laboratory industry their commitment to delay enforcement, and has stated they will notify their contractors of this decision prior to April 1. Please contact your Compliance Officer should any issues be encountered with Medicare contractors when no provider signature is included on the laboratory requisition. ACL requisitions have been updated with space for an ordering provider signature. The ordering provider signature will continue to remain optional after April 1, 2011. Requisitions that are signed will also serve as documentation of the order for reimbursement purposes. Please feel free to call with any questions or concerns,Kathy Lindgren, ACL Compliance Officer(414) 328-7916
